- Essential Functions
Places tissues in appropriate fixative or recognizes receipt of tissue in appropriate fixative (i.e., fromalin, decalcifying agents, etc.) for paraffin processing; uses rotary microtome to section paraffin tissue blocks to a four micron thickness at a rate of one block per minute; uses rotary mircotome to prepare serial sections, levels and step sections to four mircons; performs routine and special histological stains by standard procedures; cover slips and labels stained slides; judges quality of stained slide by microscope examination; prepares and reagents as necessary; collects specimens from locations in the hospital; handles tissues correctly for electron microscopy, histochemistry, and immunofluorescence; maintains a neat, clean and efficient work area; operates and utilizes necessary program on LIS and HIS; requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care/essential functions; utilizes proper body mechanics when positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and when moving equipment and supplies necessary to perform essential functions; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organizations values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families, and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; maintains accurate and complete records by performing and documenting preventive maintenance on histology equipment; accessioning specimens in the computer or manually; documenting customer complaints, ordering and registration errors and reporting to supervisor for corrective action; accepts and completes all duties positively and without conflict; cooperates, helps others and improves the performance of the unit; completes all mandatory unit, educational and hospital requirements; utilizes cost effective practices in performing all aspects of the job; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient population: Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adults and Geriatric; participates in continuing education activities; orients and trains new employees or students; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
- Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Histologic Technologist.
