Overall Job Objective

General Information

This is skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level in installing, servicing, maintaining and removing plumbing systems, swimming pool piping, natural gas piping and sewage drainage piping.

EXAMINATION: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO APPLICANTS. READ CAREFULLY. No written or oral examination will be required. Applicants will be scored on the basis of an evaluation of their education, training, experience and personal qualifications as outlined by the candidates' sworn statements in their application, upon corroborative evidence obtained by investigation and the applicants' responses to the job-specific Supplemental Questions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Completion of a trade school or apprenticeship program in plumbing and a minimum of one year journeyman level plumbing experience; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Journeyman Plumber or Master Plumber License issued by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board.


Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices of the plumbing trade.
Good knowledge of a variety of types and brands of plumbing materials.
Good knowledge of the International Code Council regulations.
Ability to read, understand and work from blue-prints and written specifications.
Ability to size cut, thread, weld and caulk pipe of any make or type used in plumbing.
Ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete a project.
Ability to replace water closets, showers, urinals, sewage and waste drainage piping, water piping and related fixtures.
Ability to perform manual labor.
Ability to work under dangerous conditions.
Ability to diagnose problems with and repair most fixtures involved in plumbing.
Ability to keep records and make report.


EXAMPLES OF WORK:  (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.)
Removes and installs receptacles, devices or appliances which are supplied with water or which receive or discharge liquids or liquid-born waste.
Installs, maintains and repairs gas, water and sewer systems, water pipes, hydrants, valves, plumbing fixtures, sinks, laundry equipment, gas ranges and their accessories and fittings.
Designs, installs, troubleshoots and repairs irrigation systems.
Repairs and modifies underground water services.
Unclogs drain pipes.
Transports tools and materials to and from job sites.
Works from sketches, rough drafts and blueprints.
Checks pre-assigned public buildings to ensure smooth operations.
Inspects and tests pipes and plumbing fixtures.
Plans and lays out work and determines materials needed for each job.
Maintains inventory of parts and supplies.
Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
Distributes parts and supplies as assigned.
May occasionally do the work of other trades.
Performs related work as required.

Important Information

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK:  An employee in this class is responsible for installing and maintaining pipe and plumbing systems.  Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures for this trade under general supervision with considerable independence of action in completing assignments and is reviewed upon completion by a Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor or other superior.  Supervision is exercised over helpers as assigned.  A Plumber must be able to lift items weighing over 40 pounds.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION:  Eligibles selected for appointment must meet the established medical and physical standards for the class of work.  The medical examination must be by one of the physicians designated by the Personnel Board.  Appointees must bear the cost of the examination. 
The Mobile County Personnel Department reserves the right to limit the number of applicants summoned for interview.  In such instances, a preliminary appraisal of qualifications, as indicated by the completed application, will be utilized as a guide in the selection of candidates to be summoned.

A "Practice Test Seminar" is held in the Personnel Department Office, 1809 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama, at 9:00 a.m. on the third Wednesday of every month.   The purpose of these seminars is to acquaint applicants or interested citizens with design format and procedures utilized by the department in its administration of written test selection devices.  Inasmuch as testing facilities are limited, the seminars will be on a first come, first served basis, as long as space remains available.
