    We are bringing about 800 new jobs to Huntsville, Alabama and building a state-of-the art advanced manufacturing facility. Defense-related engineering, program management, and related support positions will be housed at this site, home of Aerojet Rocketdyne's Defense headquarters and Rocket Shop Defense Advanced Programs.     Aerojet Rocketdyne seeks experienced Composite Case Structural Analysis Engineers for our Huntsville, AL location. We are building a team to design products such as solid rocket motors for a wide array of customers and programs, controllable solid propulsion systems, advanced solid rocket motor propulsion systems, advanced conceptual design to support the RocketShop as well as supporting enterprise wide efforts in areas such as hypersonics.

    This position may be filled at the level posted or higher levels.

    Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

    Under limited general direction and following established policies, the Engineer performs professional assignments requiring complete working knowledge of application of concepts, practices, and techniques.

    60% - Perform structural analysis for all aspects of composite structures, including external support and mounting structure. Composite structural analysis activities include strategic booster motor composite cases, tactical rocket motor cases, composite armaments, composite over-wrapped pressure vessels, and composite flight structures. Will independently develop analysis approaches, including classical hand sizing methods and 2D/3D finite element modeling. Working with the product development team, participate in trade studies and the development of component specifications. Interact with component design, manufacturing, project engineering, quality and customer support groups. Plan and execute analysis tasks with limited general direction and work effectively within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) environment. Work is reviewed by senior staff. Provide mentoring to junior engineers in composite structural analysis methods.

    15% - Provide structural analysis input to address nonconforming hardware, process planning, support production meetings to assure that design requirements are met. Review and approve engineering drawing and specification updates.

    15% - Report status and results of analysis tasks at design and program reviews.

    10% - Prepare technical reports documenting all analysis activities.


    Requires Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Materials Engineering (or related discipline) plus at least nine (9) years of directly related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). An advanced engineering degree is desired.

    • Educational coursework in Composite Design, Laminate Theory, and Composite Materials is desired.
    • Experience with analysis, design, manufacturing and test of filament-wound composite case pressure vessels for solid rocket motors is key to performing job requirements.
    • Experience with preliminary sizing tools for filament-wound composite pressure vessels is required.
    • Experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS Workbench and/or NX NASTRAN is required.
    • Familiarity with composite fiber and resin systems selection including subscale specimen testing and data analysis is desired.
    • A strong mechanical aptitude and experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
    • Familiarity with solid CAD models to generate FEA models is desired.

    US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

    Employees in these positions must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. May require the ability to travel by air or auto. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coat. These positions may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
